On a rural Northern California byway, we
admire the verdant landscape and inhale the sweet atmosphere of spring.
Here, the pavement with its yellow lines and the red fence poles strung
with barbed wire represent human enterprise. Beyond the big wooden X, a
ribbon of road wends its way past rippling green mountains and distant
