"Out to Pasture"
April 12, 2003
Here's what a photograph of the original scene looked like. This is by the side of the road, in front of a working dairy farm in West Marin County, California.
You can see some of the original pencil drawing and the first watercolor-like washes of color.
Notice the simplification of the composition, moving the little shack closer in, eliminating the blue car and moving the big rounded bush.

Size about 18 x 24

The rest of the truck is filled in with the first layers of color.
The sky, background and trees receive more attention and textures.
The beginnings of the leafy canopy.
A lot of developments can be seen in this stage. A couple of trees have been removed and the others are more defined, including their shadows. The bush, shack and road have received a couple more layers of paint. The truck has more color, contrast and definition and the foreground grass is taking shape.
This is a detail of the finished painting. Many refinements have been made to balance all the elements, with the closer headlight becoming the center of focus.
Here's what the finished painting, "Out to Pasture," looks like, matted and framed. Go back and compare it to the original reference photo at the top. You'll see that a lot of simplification has occurred in order to create an artwork.
